HOME  PROJECT MANAGEMENT NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART

In order to obtain the certification of having complied with international standards regarding the National Museum of Art, in 1999 the museum’s Board of Trustees decided to initiate the project “Proyecto MUNAL 2000”, so that it could interchange works of art with the world’s most renowned museums.

The site of the National Museum of Art is the old Palacio de Comunicaciones (Communications Palace) located in the downtown historical center of Mexico City. It was built at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century in an eclectic architectural style, inspired by the Italian Renaissance, especially the Florentine.

As the installations of MUNAL, the National Museum of Art, were designed to house the old Communications Palace, we have currently modified them based on a high technology selection in order to guarantee their optimum operation and the security of the museum.

During the refurbishment, the characteristics of the original architectural project were respected. We carried out restorations of the monumental stairway, the ceilings in hallways and showrooms, the painting War and Peace, columns, friezes, the building’s interior and exterior faςades, and banisters.

The following were included in the innovative works: installation of a high security system that guarantees the interchange of works of art with international museums; construction of a new area of administrative offices and warehouses; installation of a loading elevator to transport the works of art according to international security specifications; temperature and humidity control systems; and, the general lighting and scenery systems.

In order to carry out the Project Management services, authorities of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Institute of Fine Arts) and its Board of Trustees invited companies specialized in those services to compete for the job. Systec was chosen for its experience and commitment.

Systec took charge of:

  • Development of the executive project
  • Preparation of the catalogue of concepts
  • Supervision of the works
  • Coordination of the institutions and the ten participating companies
  • Administrative control of the contracts and their administrative fulfillment in order to conclude the work on time and as promised.

Systec also prepared

  • The “Master Plan”, which when introduced allowed us, in a preventive way, to analyze problems and give alternate solutions.

This building was inaugurated on November 27, 2000 by the then president of the Republic of Mexico, Dr. Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León.
